Fuel Change, Not Coal

Coalfield communities are facing a growing crisis: the federal agency meant to protect them-OSMRE- has been gutted to barely 200 staff nationwide after losing more than half its workforce under the Trump Administration, leaving families with fewer inspections, fewer enforcement actions, and fewer safeguards against blasting, subsidence, and water contamination.

Now, one of the most essential protections for residents- the Ten-Day Notice rule, which forces action when states ignore mining violations-is under direct attack. Fourteen states have sued to dismantle it, threatening to silence the only process many families have to get help when their water turns orange or their land begins to sink. Citizens Coal Council, together with partner organizations, has stepped in to defend this critical rule because communities cannot be abandoned to regulatory failure.
